One Artist Won’t Have to Worry About Studio Rent for a While

DUMBO Arts Festival 2010 dangles NYC’s most treasured commodity as its competition prize this year — space, an ample 750 square feet of it. The categories are: Best Outdoor Public Art Installation, Best Indoor Public Art Installation and Best Open Studio. Winner of each category will receive $1,000 cash, but one crafty artist will nestle into a rent-free studio for a year. Read more »

Dumbo De-Fence Project Demolished

Wooden wildlife cut-outs were installed on some ugly scaffolding in Dumbo last week for the De-Fence Project, an “attempt to re-plant nature into the urban façade.” However, the evolution-themed art project that coincided with BKLYN Designs, was put up without permission. So earlier this week the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation tore the pro-nature project down, reminding people that they “have lots and lots of art events, but you just have to ask for permission,” before you try to spruce up their unsightly sidewalk sheds.

REVS Locks Down New Sculpture in DUMBO

Legendary graffiti artist REVS recently installed a new sculpture on Water Street in DUMBO. Nearby another mural and sculpture, the new sculpture replaces a previous metal work, one of many pieces that disappeared off the street in a short period after the Times interview with the reclusive artist in 2005. As noted by photographer Jake Dobkin, there are “at least 11 bolts holding this one down, plus whatever else he’s hidden,” so the new piece is a bit more secure.

Death From Above: REVS and KAVES

Even if you’re not a fan of unsanctioned public art or never heard of graffiti legend REVS, just marvel at this “fire and ice themed” masterpiece done in collaboration with fellow old school vandal KAVES (Lords of Brooklyn) in DUMBO. As noted, the entire production is “even crowned with one of his [REVS] coveted sculptures” and is a big improvement from what was painted on the wall. Breaking: CNN Discovers DUMBO

A trend piece about DUMBO in 2008? Really? Really!: “Repeatedly rediscovered and renewed since the mid-17th century, Brooklyn is attracting more tourists. The borough’s latest incarnation includes the community of DUMBO (an acronym for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”). Many New Yorkers equate its energetic, creative atmosphere with SoHo in its heyday.” |CNN|
