Before “blogs” and “Facebook” and kids these days self-publishing their adolescent make-outs, there was Ed Templeton. The pro skateboarder-turned-artist’s series captures slobbering children and almost-adults with “candid realism.” Enjoy the awkward artifacts of ravenous puberty, now on view at the Half Gallery, and try not to think about Kids. “Teenage Kissers,” Ed Templeton, Jun 23 – Jul 25, Half Gallery, NYC

Next month, artist Hannes Bend is showing off a series of sugary sculptures, casting cavities of iconic form. The hard candy collection, featuring a crucifix, Durer’s “Praying Hands,” and a trophy buck, will be exhibited alongside a new series of abstract paintings by the Berlin-based artist. Sharing a playfulness with their medium, these works will be unveiled as Half Gallery opens Bend’s “Endlich,” his first solo show in the States.

- “The Reasons I Can’t Go To Sleep” by Ry Fyan
Next week artist Ry Fyan opens an exhibition of recent collages at Half Gallery. Similar to his assemblage process of painting, Fyan draws from a variety of sources, seeking “imagery and symbols that exude an uneasy frisson, a cognitive dissonance if you will, which seem to resist quick uptake and consumption.” The solo show will open from October 26th through November 12th at Half Gallery, 208 Forsyth Street.
Half Gallery’s new show is full of hot air. Opening next week, the exhibit features the inflated artwork of California-based performer, Buster Balloon, “the top balloon twister in the world” according to his secret collaborator Jeff Koons. Gallery-goers are invited to buy some short-lived, $100 “balloonicatures” during Tuesday’s show from 6 to 8 PM at 208 Forsyth Street. |W|
