Jay Shells, purveyor of etiquette signs parodying both the MTA and the DOT got sick and tired of the bland plywood wall surrounding a stagnant construction site in his West Village neighborhood so he decided to do something about it. On Friday, he broke out some spray paint and began painting a block long mural on the corner of 8th Avenue between West 13th and Horatio Streets, without permission. Read more »

Tacky Entrepreneurs Rip Off Artist’s OWS Designs

Occupy Wall Street protests inspire arty creativity, and, naturally, profiteers. The doings on the DIY E-Commerce site Cafe Press are particularly shitty. A little while ago, Jay Shells — metropolitan etiquette enforcer who punked FOX News — had outfitted the OWS marches with some snazzy new signs written by him and copywriter @blulaces. Behold, “Lost my job, found an occupation” the cheesy, cheap t-shirt, peddled for $15 to $19 a pop. Ew. Read more »

Artist Spreads Dog Sh*t Awareness Project

Just like bad habits in the subway, Jay Shells hates when people let their dogs shit all over the city’s sidewalks and so he continues his mission to educate and empower would be violators via functional street art. After christening his own neighborhood with a papered canine and a spool of biodegradable bags, he hit up the East Village and most recently, Washington Heights. Your hood could be next.
There’s no doubt that many of you have seen the real life behavioral atrocities that are committed on the subway, so you’re probably wondering what up with this slickly produced video detailing artist Jay Shells’ ‘Subway Etiquette’ project. Yeah well, us too.
Functional Street Art Tackles Major Pet Peeve
The etiquette artist who launched an underground campaign to highlight some of the worst manners exhibited on the subway, is taking his latest attempt at behavioral modification to the streets in an effort to curb an issue that infuriates most New Yorkers: dog crap. Fed up with the shit-stained sidewalks around the city, Jay Shells installed this piece on 14th Street near 8th Avenue that comes with a spool of biodegradable bags that may just guilt asshole pet owners into actually using them. This is the first of what should be many crapping canines, as he is actively accepting suggestions for other hoods in need of potent reminders.
