Boogie Shows ‘The Best of Times’ in Soho

Boogie, the Belgrade-born, Brooklyn-dwelling photographer has a showing of new work opening at the Altamont showroom tomorrow night. The show’s preview, aptly titled “The Best of Times,” depicts a decidedly brighter vision of New York than one typically sees from the gritty street photographer: no guns, no drugs, and no violence. However, those darker images might still be waiting for the show to open, from 9 to 12 PM tomorrow through May 15th, at 29 Greene Street.

Sex Doll Obsessed Collector Gets Shot

Discontent with merely one sex doll, a computer programmer has amassed a collection of more than 70 in his three-bedroom apartment outside Tokyo, including everything from cheap blow-up dolls to the $10,000 “Real Doll”. The self-proclaimed world’s biggest sex doll collector, who wears a wedding ring to mark his first night with a “Dutch Wife,” is the subject of photographer Becky Yee’s new show, “More Than a Woman,” opening tonight a Hpgrp Gallery in Chelsea. The Tokyo-based photographer, who previously shot teenaged Japanese prostitutes and the designer purses they bought with their earnings, explores the way the dolls fulfill aspects of human relationships beyond their fucking functions. The show opens from 6 to 8 pm tonight and runs through March 15.

Human-Like Animal Portraits

Sharon Montrose shot these wildly serene portrait styled photos of animals. She’s selling the photographic prints on Etsy and adds this bit of detail, most likely because many people, like us, probably couldn’t believe they’re not stuffed or drugged: “Because folks are asking – Yes, these are indeed real live animals. Most of them live happily at a small California Zoo.” |Etsy via Notcot|

Shutterbug Tom Stooddart won fourth place in the annual Taylor Wessing photo contest with this slightly morose image of Rupert Murdoch, commissioned by Time magazine during the tycoon’s $5 billion play for Dow Jones. The awards were announced on November 4th at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Click below to see first prize winner Lottie Davies’ very surreal submission from her ongoing project, “Memories & Nightmares” as well as the other two photographs that beat out the media mogul’s mug.

Crowds In Brooklyn Strip Down for Art, Politics

Photographer Shoots Models Block By Block

Fashion photography, much like contemporary art, is one of those surreal career fields where success is predicated on the varying levels of absurdity, like this series of photos depicting death to models by giant blocks. By this metric, photographer Philippe Garcia is excelling above and beyond the fray. In addition to taking pictures of sexy women crushed by falling objects from the sky, the shutterbug also likes to shoot nature and sports too. |DYT|

Photographer Shoots High As A Kite

The mere 500 pixel wide allotment for images on this very blog don’t nearly do justice to Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s mega-photography projects. The French lensman has been “photographing unique views of our planet, seen from the sky, since 1994″ and is having his first show in NYC next year. The exhibit, “Earth From Above,” will feature 150 oversized prints measuring 4′x6′ and will be displayed at the “World Financial Center Plaza and along the Battery Park City Esplanade from May 1, 2009 to June 28, 2009.” For now, click over to see 38 of these mind blowers with captions! |Boston/TheBigPicture|

Photographer Joins New Agency After McCain Photo Fallout

Sometimes activist and photographer Jill Greenberg created quite a shit storm this week after she bragged about taking bad photos of John Sidney McCain III and then doctoring them while shooting a legitimate cover for political magazine The Atlantic. The magazine said it won’t be compensating her and was even considering legal action. She has also decided to abruptly leave the two agencies that repped her, Montage and Vaughan Hannigan—with principal Bill Hannigan telling PDN it was a “mutually agreed upon decision.” Luckily, the extremely talented and now especially controversial lenswoman has been embraced by the lovingly brave arms of ArtMix Photography. Greenberg is also aggressive as ever, posting this dark new image of McCain on her website that derides him for voting against creating a national holiday for lowly community organizer Martin Luther King.
