A burglar setting up to take off with several used laptops and its “priceless,” personal contents was thwarted when the attempted crime was captured by an interactive art project’s component — a $50 motion activated camera. Ooh, robots are nifty. Read more »
SVA ‘Push The Envelope’ (Get It?!?) Door
The School of Visual Arts, my alma mater, has really not done a very good job of promoting itself recently. Last year, like many lazy advertisers, they attached themselves like a lamprey to Barack Obama’s ass. In 2008, they erected blinking star subway posters—such tired visual puns were something I was taught to avoid. SVA Resorts To BamVertising
The President and his catch phrases have previously been illicitly exploited to sell French mustard, UK tires, Russian ice cream, an Israeli language school, and Japanese cell phones, just to name a few. Now, right here in NYC, my alma mater, the School of Visual Arts, attempts to lure local liberal artistically-inclined folk to their probable career deaths with a soundbite from Obama’s inaugural address. Insert a color-pencil lion and artsy bird thing, and Bam! slap ‘em up in the subway. Click the ads, and be inspired to visual arts greatness. Go enroll, and be a blinking star just like me! |Images via: Ask A Copywriter|
As a former (non-matriculating) student of NYC’s School of Visual Arts, I get sharp, shooting pains in the right side of my brain every time I see one of the school’s less-than-stellar recruitment ads. Previously, in a subway poster advertising their Web design curriculum, the visual was…a spider’s web. If I had presented that ad in class, my SVA instructor would’ve literally lit it on fire. This time, to illustrate that you, young creative person, could become a visual arts star, they’ve used…stars (sfx: crickets). No, but WAIT—they’re BLINKING stars! To fully feel the effect of this macrocosmic creation, you must watch the 19 second video after the jump.
