Although there’s certainly a lot of activity seen in this time-lapse video detailing the construction of the 9/11 Memorial between 2004 and 20011, it’s also a testament to excruciating snail-like pace that has beset the WTC site. Remember this is eight years worth of work.
Just like the 9/11 Memorial, the annual Tribute in Light, is also facing financial struggles and without enough money, could end up going dark. Each year, the group that operates the bird disrupting beams has to scramble to cover the hundreds of thousands of dollars it costs to maintain. Following “outrage,” avant garde composer Steve Reich is self-censoring Masatomo Kuriya’s cover image of a second plane about to this the WTC from his WTC 9/11 album. It’s comprised of amplified recordings of first responders, kids saying “suddenly it was black outside,” shmira prayers over victims’ body parts and violin drones from the Kronos Quartet who made Requiem for a Dream into horror. According to the Daily News, the Millenium Hilton is suing the Port Authority and developers of the World Trade Center site for all the noise that the construction is causing. According to amNY, residents of 90 West Street, a pricey apartment complex in Lower Manhattan, are irked by the round-the-clock noise emanating from the World Center site, but the paper was only able to get one person on the record to complain bitchily. “I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in almost a year,” said Nick Oram. He moved into a fourth floor unit overlooking the pit eight months ago and must not have had the foresight to realize that it tends to get noisy living smack dab in the middle of NYC’s most prominent, ongoing construction project.
A Manhattan judge ruled against a once honorable, ex-FDNY firefighter trying to block the construction of an Islamic center near the World Trade Center site. Timothy Brown with the backing of the fanatical American Center for Law and Justice, had filed a lawsuit agains NYC’s Landmarks Preservation. Read more »

As we approach the ninth anniversary of 9/11 and it becomes apparent that Ground Zero is still a gaping hole with some minor progress, workers began installing one of two steel tridents salvaged from then ruins of the World Trade Center. The columns will mark the entrance of the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum which is expected to open next year, a decade after the attacks. |NYDN|
