The Indypendent Wants to give Occupy Wall St Its Own Newspaper

Online protests are fun and all, but sometimes it takes a a bit of sarcasm and real world activism to keep things interesting. Thankfully, we have The Yes Men, a group of pranksters who’ve previously punked the New York Post and the New York Times. And they’re now raising money via kickstarter to do the same to the Wall Street Journal. Currently, they’ve raised a little over $6k and will begin production of The Occupy Wall Street Journal once they reach $12k. UPDATE: It’s The Indypendent who is responsible for this project. The Yes Men sent out an email on their behalf and featured it on their ‘Yes Lab’ page on Kickstarter.

AP Falls for Yes Men’s GE Prank

Earlier today, pranky activist group the Yes Men, posing as General Electric, issued a press release announcing that the company would be “gifting its entire 2010 tax refund, worth $3.2 Billion, to the US Treasury on April 18, Tax Day.” Amazingly, the Associated Press ran with the bogus story. “There’s a fun little action going on tomorrow,” writes the Yes Men. The activisty pranksters are recruiting New Yorkers to help them pull of some sort of stunt that won’t be announced until 5:15PM. Yes Men Leader Freed

After being held for 26 hours, Yes Men co-founder Andy Bichlbaum was released and all charges were dropped according to a press released issued by the activist group. He says the “judge just laughed,” but the “police had a less well-developed sense of humor.” Bichlbaum was arrested on Tuesday morning and charged with trespassing during a gathering of 21 Survivaballs on the East River who were planning to “take the UN by storm.” Although he admits that getting locked up was kind of a drag, he was more focused on the upside: PR! Police Arrest Yes Men During ‘Survivaball’ Demo

Yesterday’s distribution of the fake New York Post mostly went off without a hitch, but this morning’s ‘Survivaball‘ demonstration? Not so much. The NYPD ticketed several Yes Men and even arrested co-founder Andy Bichlbaum around 10AM at 21st street and the East River while the group was showcasing their parody survival product. Bichlbaum reportedly had an outstanding warrant for an unpaid summons—not the brightest move for a prolific prankster engaging in very public stunts. But still, cops suck. Fake New York Post Hits the Streets

After successfully punking the New York Times last year, the Yes Men are at it again. This morning, the activist group distributed 1 million fake copies of the New York Post around the city. Coinciding with the first day of the U.N. summit on climate change, the 32-page paper highlights the potentially disastrous effects of global warming, and in true tabloid fashion, chose the appropriate headline: “WE’RE SCREWED.” In addition to the print version, the group launched a website mimicking the Post’s, complete with the horrid new redesign.
