We’ve all snuck photos of fellow subway commuters, but photographer Rebecca Davis went beyond your pedestrian Instagram snap. She calls her project New York Underground “an update” to Walker Evans’ Many Are Called.
Davis turned some of her work into this narrative short that plays out like a photo flip-book of interactions. Some sequences of nuances are fantastic. The reluctant, messy kiss. The dejected idleness after the other leaves. The bugged-out snoozer. The dirty old man fiddling a lingerie mailer. The coy teen lap-sitter. These are real… intimate. Commuters 2012. Check it out. Creep.
