The thing about hiring competent young people is that other media companies swoop in on them. ANIMAL’s previous interns have been snagged by TIME, USA Today, Huffington Post and more. So, we’re looking for more paid interns who want to make stuff with us (look at this stuff we made last year). Also, we have a nice office, free food and coffee (see photo of coffee).
ANIMAL Is Seeking Editorial Interns, Starting Late March!
Ideal candidates are available daily or for as many days a week as possible — working mostly from the office or on assignments, though sometimes remotely. Please show us your journalism/blogging experience or other valid demonstration of strong writing/thinking/not-bullshitting/speed/efficiency/skills. Interest in art is very much appreciated. We’d love to have people who know their way around WordPress, Photoshop, and most importantly, the streets of New York City. Oh, you can take pictures and edit video? Awesome! Self-motivated, detail-oriented pros and weirdos wanted. Cowards are not.
Editorial Intern Duties Include:
Finding fresh and inspiring content online and IRL.
Writing blog posts.
Working on original stories: journalism.
Directly assisting on video shoots.
Transcripts.
If interested, please e-mail a quick cover letter, resume, availability and most importantly, links to 5-10 things you’ve written, plus stuff you’ve made if you have other creative interests and links to your personal page/Twitter/whatever looks clever, if you like. Pitch marina@animalnewyork.com with the subject “Editorial Intern Application.” Application deadline: March 15th, 2013. This is a paid internship. You do not need to be in school.
Our interns have broken stories on gallon smashing and famous last tweets, fabulously covered exhibits with New Aesthetic pizza and MetroCard art, interviewed some weird, risque burlesque performers, made a kick-ass supercut of famous people playing themselves, hunted pigeon portraits for our popular Today’s Pigeon feature, edited a viral Russian dash-cam car crash supercut, designed pictogram icons for a history of NY subway deaths and the ANIMAL stickers, deconstructed “the mafia pizza” recipe, visited a Mariachi Academy in East Harlem, spent a night in a mini art dome in a park, told the Boy Scouts they can keep their medals, interviewed the cast of “Copper,” and hung out with freaky circus peepswho hang shrunken heads from their scrotums. Former ANIMAL intern, the talented Nate Cepis is now our staff designer. Our amazing full time writer/interviewer extraordinaire Andy Cush was once a summer intern.
We’re also looking for freelance writers.
