Photos of Old Film Reels Are Nearly as Pretty as the Films Themselves

April 24, 2013 | Andy Cush

Photographer Reiner Reidler created these images by finding film reels of classic movies, then illuminating them from behind with film lights and photographing them. The color palettes of the films Reidler used–including The Godfather, Citizen Kane, and Alice in Wonderland, are distilled into abstract rings of light. “The concept is to confront the viewer with the image of an object and in doing so recall images from the spectator’s memory,” the photographer writes on his site. “By reading the movie title, I want to generate emotions and images from our memory.” See a few examples with film titles in the gallery.
