Though every New York City school shuttered by Hurricane Sandy have since reopened, 50 schools across the five boroughs are still missing classroom tools that were lost in the storm, and only 25 of those have gotten a visit from FEMA. And though that federal agency will contribute more than half of the city’s $200 million repair budget, that money won’t come until FEMA signs off on specific fixes.
“I want to tell FEMA, don’t put our children last,” said Democratic City Councilman Donovan Richards, whose Queens district includes the Rockaways.
“They don’t have books, and they lost all of their computers,” he added of Far Rockaway’s P.S. 106, a badly damaged school. “How do we make these schools whole again?”
