For Australian cyclist Shane Perkins, the Keirin–a Japanese cycling race in which participants sprint after a lap paced by a motorcycle–means a lot of things. It’s redemption for his spotted past as an Olympic competitor; it’s a way back into professional cycling; it’s a chance to provide for his family. Ryoku, a film documenting Perkins’s personal and professional journey and his encounter with Keirin racing, is showing tonight at the 2013 Bicycle Film Festival.
