While riding through the LES on my way home last night, I popped by Max Fish to see what was left of the now defunct space. There was about half-a-dozen people there–including owner Ulli Rimkus–sweeping and cleaning up the place, which already looked like a shell of its former self just 48 hours after its final hurrah.
The bar had been dismantled, fixtures were removed, and even the name Max Fish was cut out of the wood sign out front. But most startling of all, was the bathroom.
It was completely buffed of all the signature graffiti that had accumulated over the years, sans some tags on the floor. I asked one of the helpers how long they had to get the place in order. “That’s it,” he replied. “At midnight it’s all over.” (Photos: Bucky Turco/ANIMALNewYork)
