Meet the East Village’s Most Eccentric Shopkeeper

August 12, 2013 | Andy Cush

Here’s The Birdman, a 10-minute documentary on the proprietor of Rainbow Music, a shop stocked with LPs, CDs, cassettes and VHS tapes at the corner of First Avenue and St. Mark’s Place. If you’ve spent any time in the East Village you’ve likely walked by; whether you’ve been inside or not largely depends on your patience for Hoarders levels of clutter and overstuffed shelves. The Birdman himself is a soft-spoken genial type who says he made enough money on Wall Street in his younger days that the financial success of the store isn’t much matter to him. See the whole thing above.
