Good news for Rockaways straphangers and those stranded by service suspensions on R train. The Rockaway ferry, which recently began making a stop in Sunset Park on its way to Manhattan, will continue service until January. Ferry service was initially supposed to end this month, but was extended thanks in part to a push from local politicians.
“It’s another great step toward helping southern Queens and Rockaway families recover from Superstorm Sandy,” said Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder (D-Rockaway Beach). The ferry began running after Sandy, when service outages on the A train stranded commuters on the Rockaways, and the Sunset Park stop was added due to hurricane-related maintenance on the R train.
No word on the price of the service extension, or where the money is coming from. Anecdotally, I’ve ridden the ferry from my apartment in Sunset Park to Manhattan, and while a boat ride is certainly more pleasant than a trip on the subway, transferring from the R to the N still feels like the faster way to get to the city.
