Zoom In: Hansom Cab Horses
and Their Drivers

September 6, 2013 | Aymann Ismail

I’ll never get used to seeing horses clopping down busy Manhattan streets. I shot these horses’ portraits near the corner of 52nd Street and 11th Avenue, where many of these tourist-transporting animals and their novelty vehicles are parked. Just look at those faces. Look into their eyes. Then, looking beyond the horses, behind their swinging bag of poop, up into the carriage and into the faces of the drivers. Now back to the horses.

If it makes you really, really sad, don’t worry — the animals will be replaced with antique-style electric cars soon, maybe. Check back every Friday for a new photo essay. (Photos: Aymann Ismail/ANIMALNewYork)
