There’s a snippet of a video called “Ira Glass on Storytelling” that’s become a mantra for a certain type of aspiring creative person. Speaking about what might be referred to as the “taste gap,” the This American Life host advises that anyone who wants to do artistic work hits a wall at a certain point: your taste is developed to the point that you know what’s good, but your skills haven’t caught up, and you’re stuck knowing all the ways in which what you’re making sucks, without the tools to make it better. The animator Daniel Sax created some beautiful visuals to accompany Glass’s monologue. Watch above.
