In a show of protest against Russia’s oppressive anti-gay laws, Toronto is flying a rainbow above its city hall during the Sochi Winter Olympics, along with a host of other Canadian cities. Mayor Rob Ford, who never saw an issue he couldn’t make an ass of himself over, is upset about it.
“This is about Olympics,” he said today. “This is about being patriotic to your country, this is not about someone’s sexual preference.”
Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly, who clearly has more sense than his boss, disagrees. “There’s no antagonism between the two flags,” he argued. “Cities right across the country are doing this. This is an expression of Canadianism.”
According to Daniel Dale, a city hall reporter at the Toronto Star, the mayor is now hanging the loneliest Canadian flag in a city hall window to express his displeasure.
