Although your eyes may tell you otherwise, it’s not just Law & Order:SVU and Girls filming in New York City. Self-described “data geek” Max Galka of Metrocosm compiled and visualized all the movie filming permits filed with the Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting between 2011 and 2013, the last year for which Galka was able to obtain data (he told ANIMAL he’s awaiting 2014’s data, and will update the map when he receives it). 517 films and 17,241 locations were made and used over the three year span. Galka created an interactive map of the filming locations all over the city, pinpointing the blocks on which movies like Birdman, The Wolf Of Wall Street, and The Dark Knight Rises were filmed.
The most-filmed non-studio block between 2011 and 2013 was Water Street between Wall Street and Maiden Lane in the Financial District, where scenes in big-budget movies like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were filmed. The most filmed-in neighborhood was Midtown, followed by Williamsburg, the Financial District, Harlem and Greenpoint, respectively. Spend some time poking around to see what was filmed in your neighborhood you might have missed.
