Poor Santiago Munoz. The 14-year-old from Queens is a student at the Bronx High School of Science. Munoz, who lives in Far Rockaway, wakes up at 5 a.m. each school day, taking two hours and twenty minutes to get to school and usually two hours and forty minutes to get back. The trek requires two buses and two subways. At least he’s making the most of his MetroCard transfers.
And Munoz handles the five hours wasted on public transportation each weekday by looking on the bright side:
Even though it takes me longer, their trips are harder. I think I’m privileged to take a train compared to a donkey. I’d prefer a long ride and a safer trip than going one hour through a gang-filled or war-torn country.
Meanwhile, a thousand subway riders just bitched about needing to wait five more minutes for the next express train.
