Marilyn Minter’s Tote Bag Benefits Planned Parenthood

July 3, 2014 | Marina Galperina

It’s been a terrible summer for reproductive rights. The Supreme Court struck down “buffer zones” preventing anti-abortion protestors from approaching clinic entrances and patients. The Hobby Lobby decision ruled that corporations can deny birth control health coverage based on their corporate personhood’s religious preferences, making Planned Parenthood as important as ever in providing these resources.

Recently, artist Marilyn Minter collaborated with American cosmetics brand retailer Kiehl’s on a limited edition tote bag to benefit Planned Parenthood. The totes will go on sale at Kiehl’s newest location in Nolita. The store opens on July 10th, unveiling “a permanent installation” by the artist.

“Planned Parenthood is getting $20,000, which is a lot more than I can afford, plus whatever the bags sell for,” Marilyn Minter tells ANIMAL about Kiehl’s donation. The artist shot the images for the opening for free, and two of the images will be featured on the front and back side of the tote bags. The tote bags are being released in a limited edition of 250. All proceeds or the sales will be donated to Planned Parenthood.

“I fought so hard for safe and legal abortions and watching our rights getting dismantled is making me crazy,” Marilyn Minter says. “I hope that Hobby Lobby opened a pandora box for your generation.” Minter says that after the Supreme Court decision, she is trying to negotiate further donations to Planned Parenthood. (Image: @mintermarilyn)
