Unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, here’s the first trailer for director George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, 25 years in the making. So long, Mel Gibson. Hello, Tom Hardy. Also steel, speed, vicious confrontations (while speeding) and sprawling, sandy dystopian landscapes. (Apparently, filming for the films had to be moved to Nambia because the Australian desert started blooming after some unexpected rain and wildflowers are decidedly not dystopian.)
According to Miller, his fourth Mad Max film is “almost a continuous chase,” “the purest form of cinema.” It looks wisely light on CG. Charlize Theron plays Imperator Furiosa. Also, we’re all fucked…
All the Mad Max films are set in a post-apocalyptic world in which oil has become scarce; competing groups battle with each other in weaponised vehicles to seize control of what remains. Although the original movies were partly inspired by the oil crisis of 1973, Miller has said that the message is still relevant today. “In many ways we’re sort of doomed to repeat the whole history,” he said. “We arguably have been fighting oil wars ever since.”
…but the movie looks fantastic!
