Graffiti Complaints Up All Across the City

October 20, 2014 | Bucky Turco

Good news graffiti writers, you’re getting noticed. Complaints about graffiti are not only increasing in places like Sunset Park and Woodside, but also citywide, according to Capital New York:

[A]s of Oct. 12, graffiti complaints have increased 24 percent over the same period last year, from 6,947 to 8,635.

This is bad news for NYOD Commissioner Bill Bratton who often invokes the broken windows theory and said he would focus police resources on combatting the outlaw art because it’s a gateway to worse crimes: One minute kids are writing their names, the next they’re writing ransom notes.

In the past few months, Bratton has also claimed that the Museum of the City of New York is indoctrinating kids into being criminals in its City As Canvas exhibit, that roadside tags off the LIE drive him nuts, and that graffiti is used by gangs “to spread messages.”
