Swiss artist Andy Denzler’s voyeuristic paintings look like home movie stills, crinkled by VHS tracking static. Yes, video tapes. Remember those? His most recent body of work leans away from his signature monochrome seaside abstractions and features lots of ladies. Less anonymous silhouettes. More bangs and bras. “Surface,” Andy Denzler, May 18 – Jul 2, Claire Oliver Gallery, NYC
Katrina’s Handjob: That’s what happened this time when Michael Anderson “upcycled” the stream of 500-1,600 ads we’re bombarded with daily. If only the inside of our pop-culture-over-loaded brains was this aesthetic… His new series of cut-up, reconstructed street posters and billboards will be on view at Claire Oliver Gallery, now that Anderson parted ways with the hoighty-toighty stiffs at Marlborough. “The Street is My Palette,” Michael Anderson. Norbert Brunner at Claire Oliver, Because You Are Great

Claire Oliver Gallery announces Fuck Luck, an inaugural American exhibition of Austrian artist Norbert Brunner, featuring “juxtaposing” of “large scale crystal embedded mirrors with iconic photo-portraits” that invite the viewer to (metaphorically) step into the work and do some positive self-evaluation, which should be easy when you’re reflected and bejeweled with “you are great” and “I am.” Fuck Luck is a mixed media sculpture exhibition. Good vibes.

Tom Sanford Is Seeing Stars
Artist Tom Sanford demonstrates the high art of tabloid gossip for his latest series of relatively small paintings depicting the media-frenzied likes of Tiger Woods, Susan Boyle, and the White House crashing Salahis. The work will featured as part of group show at Claire Oliver Fine Art opening this week.

Animals Used to Illustrate Human Evils
Through careful animal effigies, Beth Cavener Stichter encourages viewers to consider the uncomfortable, dark side of the human condition: “child abuse, pornography, self loathing, and insecurity.” In an upcoming solo exhibition at Chelsea’s Claire Oliver gallery, the artist is exhibiting these anthropomorphic sculptures, including goats, hares and hounds getting it on, roasted and otherwise screwed. “On Tender Hooks” opens October 22nd and is on view through December 5th at 513 West 26th Street.

Below is a snippet describing artist Gerry Snyder’s upcoming “Fundamental” exhibit at Claire Oliver: “The figures that populate Snyder’s narratives are hermaphroditic creatures that recall the Judaeo-Christian concept that woman was created from man, the natural extrapolation of which is that God’s most perfect creation, the original human, was transgendered. Snyder’s little beings have no mouths thus, they have no ability to speak, they often lack arms and legs thus cannot act for themselves.” That’s one way to explain the Garden of Eden, although the church might have a little problem with that depiction. The solo show featuring large scale works opens on April 17th and runs through May 17th.
