Kenny Scharf Begins Winter Mural

Here’s Kenny Scharf a few minutes ago getting started on the freshly bombed and buffed mural wall on Houston Street. It doesn’t look like anything yet, sans one of his signature characters, but a little dude was heard exclaiming “Yay! A clown!” Kenny Scharf’s daughter Malia and crew were on site videographing the mural-making for a documentary film she’s making on her artist dad. Additional process and autograph shots below. SACE Over Everyone

TWIST and crew’s tag-filled masterpiece on Houston Street has has officially been bombed, hard! In photos posted on flickr earlier today, one brave young soul is seen painting a monster SACE tribute, in the middle of the goddamn day and presumably without permission using a fire extinguisher, while cameras snapped away. UPDATE: Semi-legal. Read more »

Regular People Illegally Writing on TWIST’s Legal Graffiti Wall

With the exception of a few tags, no prominent graffiti writers have bombed the Deitch wall that TWIST and company spray pained months ago in the Lower East Village, but there has been plenty of John and Jane Doe’s leaving their mark—Tumblrs included. It’s kind of ironic that vandals have mostly respected the wall, while the general public hasn’t, no?

Deitch Selling Graffiti in a Book

To complement his Street Art and Graffiti MoCA Extravaganza coming in April 2011, gone-west curator/critic Jeffrey Deitch is releasing a new book – Art in the Streets. It will feature a long chronology of graffiti and street art that his sort have figured out how to sell, from Jean-Michel Basquiat on, but do we really need another book on graffiti? Will it be on par with some of the movement’s cult classics or merely be a hefty gallery guide? On the book cover: TWIST’s Deitch Wall, appropriately.

TWIST and AMAZE Ignoring the NYPD

The night TWIST and crew tagged the Deitch wall it was action packed. After a car flipped a block away, the NYPD moved in to shut down traffic and question the writers just as they were hitting the spot above the wall. Watch as the officer motions them to come down and they keep painting instead. Maybe they didn’t hear him? (Video: CHINO BYI) Read more »

Motivational Artist Using TWIST’s Graffiti To Sell Art

A self-described “motivational artist” was posted up by TWIST’s Deitch wall on Saturday with a basket of scrolls for sale. Although he wasn’t sure who did the tags, he was very appreciate of the foot traffic it’s bringing. And he’s right, in the few minutes I was standing there with him, he sold two at $5 a pop. Cha-ching. (Photo: ANIMALNewYork)

Top Tags Buffed From TWIST’s Mural

Less than 24 hours after Team TWIST completed the Deitch wall, the tags they did way above the mural were promptly painted over by workers. Apparently, that part of the building is for ad projecting, not art! (Photo: Jim Kiernan)

TWIST’s Completed Masterpiece

TWIST and company finished the mural that is likely to breed outrage, anarchy and cliché news narratives questioning whether graffiti is art. (Photo: Marina Galperina/ANIMALNewYork)

TWIST’s Tagged Tribute

Celebrating handstyles and the type of graffiti the public hates most, TWIST aka Barry McGee, AMAZE and crew (shout out to CHINO) bombed the newly prepped Deitch wall on Houston Street and Bowery with hundreds of one color red tags. They began work around midnight and as of 3AM or so, this is what the wall looked like. UPDATE: See it completed. (Photos: ANIMALNewYork)

Shepard Fairey’s Mural Is No More

Poof! Although it was supposed to stay up until the end of the year, Shepard Fairey’s May Day mural on Houston Street is gone reports EV Grieve. On Wednesday, workers dismantled what was left of the illegally built wheatpasted wall that suffered numerous attacks during its four month life. Now, the question on everyone’s mind: Will the owners of the property ever set Os Gêmeos free?
