Indian Point Rapidly Responds To Quake Concerns On Twitter

The earthquake that lightly rattled the East Coast today really freaked New Yorkers (and Twitter users) out. It’s worth noting that earlier this year, a federal report put Indian Point at the top of a list of nuclear reactors that are most vulnerable to quakes. Something Just Shook New York City

An earthquake shook the New York City area today and along the eastern coast of the United States. A 5.8 magnitude reading was recorded between Charlottesville and Richmond, Virginia. Buildings including some on Delancey Street were evacuated shortly after tremors struck, but the real reverberations were felt on Twitter. UPDATE: The earthquake has just been upgraded to a 5.9 magnitude reading.

These Aren’t Japanese Construction Workers

They’re newscasters in Japan covering the aftermath of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that shook the shit out of the country on Friday afternoon and caused a tsunami, creating even more destruction. With the island nation bracing for the aftershocks and additional quakes—like the one that reportedly just struck the city of Nagano—you really can’t blame these journalists for looking ridiculous.

Toads: Man’s Real Best Friend

With earthquakes becoming more frequent—southern California was hit on Sunday with one measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale—here’s some good news from the science world. Researchers in Italy witnessed a mass exodus of male frogs from breeding sites they normally don’t abandon days before the 2009 quake that struck L’Aquila and think they could serve as early warning detectors. Data shows that 96% of the males broke out five days before the quake and by day three everyone was gone.

Not only did the quake in Chile make an earth day shorter by a few undetectable seconds, but it also moved the entire city of Concepcion 10 feet to the west.
