Hawk Just Chilling In Downtown Brooklyn

A reader who shares my affection for a certain local tabloid, was on his way to an art exhibit in Downtown Brooklyn recently and saw a hawk hanging out on the sidewalk. He snapped a few photos of the bird and then it was gone, but a New York Post reporter appeared. Blown away by the shots, the scribe asked the photographer to email them to the paper. A possibly sick hawk landed in Midtown and a crowd of normally ruthless New Yorkers actually stopped and showed some compassion for the bird. Animal Care & Control were alerted to the scene after several people called it in, but the hawk flew away. Go watch the video and restore your faith in humanity. |Gothamist|

Rat Murdered In Prospect Park

They may not be the biggest or dirtiest, but New York’s rats are no less detestable. Over the weekend I had the pleasure of watching nature do its part to control the furry rodents in Prospect Park. A Red-tailed Hawk swooped down and plucked a rat out of Long Meadow, before shredding and devouring its carcass as a small crowd of onlookers quietly applauded.
