Greg Haberny unfolds a story board of our national pastime – mid-recession survival – with part movie sets/part art installations, plus a load of mixed media work spanning two floors for his upcoming exhibition at Like the Spice. Listing Hitchcock and Larry Clark as influences and melding vintage comic, ads, pin-ups and found objects, Haberny will also participate at the Affordable Art Fair this May, selling moderately priced work and shining shoes to pay for his health insurance premium increase. “The Homeless Boys Social Club,” Greg Haberny, Apr 16 – May 16, Like the Spice Gallery, NYC

Bennett Morris Studies Fear Underwater

Later this month, Bennett Morris unveils some beautifully disastrous photos with the opening of “Climate Untamed,” his solo show at Williamsburg’s Like the Spice Gallery. The Maine-based artist builds large-scale dioramas, handcrafted from pieces of model kits, bits of trash and other building materials. These careful constructions are then drowned in water as paint and color are added to create ethereal, underwater landscapes. Out of Morris’ soaked study of beauty, fear, and “the diluted modern politics of ‘Shock and awe,’” come these photographs, simultaneously dark and delightful.

Artist Assistants Show Their Work ‘Off the Clock’

After laboring in anonymity for their bigger name bosses, seven artists will get their own recognition. Like the Spice opens “Off the Clock,” a new exhibition from past and present studio assistants to Takashi Murakami, Kehinde Wiley, Jeff Koons and Marilyn Minter among others. But when the show opens tomorrow night, the focus is on Rachel Beach, Jason Bryant, Allison Edge, Charlie Ledbetter, Jenny Morgan, and David Mramor. You can see their work through September 5 at 224 Roebling Street in Williamsburg.
