Over the summer, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a request for proposals to design, build, and run a building full of 275- to 300-square-foot apartments on East 27th Street. The units are smaller than the city’s regulations currently allow, and would serve as a pilot program for downsized living. “Research has shown that stable, affordable housing can have a positive impact on health and well-being,” said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Linda I. Gibbs at the time. “[The program] will allow us to better meet the changing housing needs of New Yorkers.”
Today, Bloomberg will announce the program’s winner, who will presumably go on to develop the building–and the first livable model for micro-apartments in New York. We’ll update when details about the tiny apartments come in.
