Artist Antonia Basler re-imagines her old family photos with her recent series Content Aware, using the Photoshop feature of the same name. Basler transforms the original photos into two sets: the first in which her subjects’ faces are erased entirely, and the second in which those same faces, as if they’d left their bodies behind and teleported into another dimension, are endlessly cloned. In both cases, the effect is eerily anonymous and surreal.
Photoshop’s website describes its “Content Aware” feature as being able to “analyze the contents of the image to figure out what the photo would have looked like if the unwanted object or area had never been there.” Apply that to family psychology. Dark, isn’t it?
