Good News for Immigrant Artists

July 3, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

It may soon be much easier for foreign artists to spend time in the US. Last week immigration reform bill decision outlined new benefits and rights for immigrants entering the country, but also included “The Arts Require Timely Service Act” a provision, which will require U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to ensure timely processing for visa petitions filed by or on behalf of nonprofit arts-related organizations.

The bill now currently awaits a vote in the House of Representatives and is a step in the right direction to make the lives of immigrants artists just a little easier.

Under the current model, an artist applying for a visa can expect to wait upwards of six months for approval and must pay the hefty fee of $1,225 if they expect to receive any type of expedited service. (Image: Business Insider)
