Manhattan is the island of skyscrapers, traffic jams, art, and nightlife, each of which can be whimsically accompanied by its own fair amount of garbage and inconveniences… and a beach?
There are plans to construct a beach right on Manhattan’s own waterfront, not too far from the aforementioned skyscrapers. (Perhaps they’ll provide some much needed shade?) Reuters reports:
The $7 million Brooklyn Bridge Beach plan, whose details were unveiled on Thursday, covers 11,000 square feet area under the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge, at the mouth of the East River.
At the moment, the current site in which the beach will be constructed leaves much to be desired and has been described by some as “a trash-strewn no-man’s land.”
Taking into account lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy, the proposal has thoughtfully included salt marsh planters and wetlands that would serve as an effective buffer area against future storms, as well as other environmental threats.
That being said, I’m sure that many of us would love to see this fantasy become a reality (myself included, obviously).
