Just about everything Banksy has put up in New York this month has been defaced in some way or destroyed outright shortly after it was publicized. His first Better Out Than In piece was no exception–first, it was tagged up, then the sign was stolen, and the Smart Crew put up a modified version, and finally, the whole thing was buffed.
Now, it seems that whoever has Banksy’s original “Graffiti is a crime” sign has been bringing it around the city and taking pictures. The signofbanksy Instagram account has images of the sign in front of the Bowery wall, in the West Village, in front of a Village Voice box, and a few other locations.
Of course, it could always be one of these weird fakes.
