Listen In: Protomartyr Made You a Playlist

April 8, 2014 | Andy Cush

Listen In“ is a weekly feature in which we ask musicians to curate a mixtape-length YouTube playlist of songs they’re currently digging.

This week’s playlist comes from the Detroit punk band Protomartyr, whose excellent sophomore album Under Color of Official Right was released today via Hardly Art. Though the new record mellows out the raw, drunken punch of their debut, it adds atmosphere and puts frontman Joe Casey’s commanding voice front and center where it belongs.

The band’s 25-track list is stylistically all over the map, and includes a number of forgotten band’s from Protomartyr’s hometown. The 1960s Detroit psych band Index’s take on “You Keep Me Holding On” is a standout. Click the big play button above to hear the whole playlist or scroll down to see and hear individual tracks.
