NYPD Officers to Carry Heroin Overdose Antidote

May 27, 2014 | Andy Cush

In an expansion of a program that’s been running in Staten Island for about a month, cops across the city will begin carrying naloxone, a potentially life-saving drug that combats opiate overdoses. Given that heroin use is on the upswing nationwide and in NYC, it’s a prudent, laudable move.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office will subsidize the OD kits, which cost about $60 a pop, for police departments across the state. Each unit contains two pre-filled syringes, and atomizers for delivering naloxone nasally. According to the New York Times, it is “not immediately clear” when cops will begin carrying the drug.
