The FAA is struggling to develop regulations for the use of flying cameras, commonly referred to as “drones,” as they become more and more widely used. Currently, there’s some confusion around what is legal to do with your drone and where, as demonstrated by the recent arrest of two men who flew a “drone” too close to an NYPD helicopter. Thankfully, this helpful interactive map by Bobby Sudekum shows the places where no-fly zones have already been implemented.
The three main locations to be avoided are airports, military bases and national parks. Sudekum has created a public Github repository for drone regulation info. Anyone can add a source and improve the map.
