Demonstrators ignored Mayor de Blasio’s request to halt protests until after the funerals for two slain police officers have concluded, and marched in Manhattan on Tuesday evening.
“Hey-hey, ho-ho, these racist cops have got to go,” chanted protesters as they strutted along Fifth Avenue’s luxury shopping district and generated a new hashtag on social media: “#ShutDown5thAve.”

The action started at 59th Street and then proceeded through the area’s ritzy shopping district. “The whole damn system is guilty as hell… indict, convict send those killer cops to jail,” recited the crowd. As they moved north and snaked through the streets, the protesters alternated between walking on the sidewalk and walking in the street, blocking traffic.

The march reached 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard a little before 9PM.
“Who shuts shit down?,” yelled one man into a megaphone as the crowd answered back, “We shut shit down.”
