Sheepshead Bites reports that the Parks Department has caved to demands of luxury condo residents that a boardwalk comfort station (aka public restroom) be moved out of view. God forbid residents of the Oceana luxury condos on Brighton Beach should have to look at a beachfront comfort station that’s elevated to avoid being destroyed by a flood. I mean, it’s used by people who can’t afford a condo to change in. Can you imagine? How gross is that, having to look at the outside of a structure where poor people do their business? The other comfort stations of this type are 25 feet high, but this one will be just 8 feet off the ground, at the same level as the boardwalk. It will be moved to a different location on the boardwalk, away from the front of the building.
As if that isn’t enough, the comfort station, which was already under construction, was slated to be paid for completely out of federal recovery funding received after Hurricane Sandy. $2.5 million was already spent. Now, due to the revision, the federal money is spent and an additional $2.5 million in city taxpayer money will be used to finish the project.
According to Sheepshead Bites:
The changes came at the urging of Oceana condominium residents. They argued during public hearings that the original site, just outside of their building, would cause odors and unwelcome guests. Meanwhile, they also argued that the height of the structure – topping out at more than 20 feet about the boardwalk – would block their oceanfront views.
“I paid good money for this tacky condo, and I’ll be damned if some peasant is going to use the bathroom near it!”
