Creepytings, the young, Instagram-happy street artist, came to the world’s attention last week for painting some of America’s most beloved national parks, and now she’s reportedly cooperating with the authorities who are investigating the case.
Redditors have been credited with helping to track down the young woman, whose real name is reportedly Casey Nocket. According to Trail Mob, she has gone to the National Park Service and offered to turn herself in for painting some rock formations despite no charges having been filed against her yet. A parks service spokeswoman said that at this time, they haven’t concluded that all ten incidents being investigated were by the same person.
If she’s charged with a misdemeanor, she could face up to one year in prison and/or a $5,000 fine. If she’s hit with a felony, there’s a maximum of one year in prison and/or a $20,000 fine. That’s per count, so all ten rolled together could be a pretty tough penalty.
Creepytings’ artworks really pissed off a lot of people and even the UK’s Guardian did an op-ed condemning her actions. Some people rallied to her defense, most notably Cosmopolitan, which applauded her for inspiring girls to break the rules. Girl power!
One of the most absurd developments in this story, though, is the National Park Service asking news organizations to blur out photos of Creepytings’ criminal art:
The Park Service is asking all media outlets to blur the pictures and to stop sharing unblurred images so as to not give the vandal publicity for these destructive works.
…And them complying.
