DOGE chairman Elon Musk is having a hell of a Monday. Tesla stock is in freefall as nationwide protests and vandalism of the car maker’s showrooms reach ludicrous mode. One dealerships has reportedly resorted to hanging a sign that reads: “We hate him too!” Turns out, the world’s richest welfare queen—who profits off government contracts—doesn’t get much sympathy when he slashes federal jobs to offset tax cuts for himself and his ultra-rich consortium of edgelords.

Meanwhile, Twitter got hacked, temporarily disrupting the MAGA-Nazi echo chamber and proving once again that Musk’s tech empire is held together with duct tape and vibes. Oh, and SpaceX just lost another rocket recently in a glorious mid-air fireball, because why not add some literal explosions to the metaphorical ones? If he can’t keep his own platforms, stock, or rockets from crashing, why in the Uncle Sam fuck would anyone trust him with the keys to the country? Can someone please just do it already?

New York’s war on weed isn’t over—Gov. Hochul wants to change the law so that cops can use the odor of cannabis as justification to administer drug tests and arrest individuals for impaired driving. This provision, jumbled into the latest budget, would undo years of progress and give police another excuse for bogus stops. Never mind that THC impairment can’t be measured like alcohol, or that legal weed was supposed to mean less harassment, not more. This is especially true for minorities, who have historically been profiled more than any other group, despite the state decriminalizing herb back in the late 1970’s. This could also affect cannabis workers, who simply reek like flowers from being around it all day, adding another layer of injustice. This perfectly timed shot of a badger gazing at a spray painted version of itself, snapped by British photographer Ian Woods, just won the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award. After noticing the woodland creature’s nocturnal feeding habits, he staked out an area just off the road near the stenciled Banksy piece, waiting for a real badger to make an appearance—and finally, one did!

If Rome is the Eternal City, New York is its twin flame: a gritty, glittering town built on the backs of empires won and lost, reduced to rubble and reborn like the phoenix. After ignoble defeat in World War II, Italy reemerged as a a beacon of culture and style with La Dolce Vita in the 1960s. But underneath the sparkling veneer, the dark, relentless shadows of Neo-realism lurked. Here the brutal cost of modern life was exposed, a world filled with victims, villains, and outlaws. It was catnip for a new generation of American filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola who saw in Little Italy a kindred spirit. With the epic collapse of New York in the 1970s, Hollywood closely followed suit, crafting a wealth of neo-realist copaganda films and TV shows that cast police officers as rugged anti-heroes locked in battle with the underworld. Reality was less flattering. They were simply working class high school graduates willing to do the bidding of the state.

“When asked why I became so interested in the police, I have to answer, everyone should be. If we do not concern ourselves with who the police are – who they really are — not just ‘cops’ or ‘pigs,’ ‘law enforcement officers’ or ‘boys in blue,’ we run the real risk of finding that we no longer have public servants who are required to protect the public, but a lawless army from which we will all take orders,” photographer Leonard Freed (1929–2006) wrote in “Police Work,” first published in 1980. After documenting Black life across the nation during the mid-1960s at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, the Brooklyn native and celebrated Magnum Photos member returned home and embarked on a decade-long journey behind the thin blue line...
