Creepy Plasmodial Slime Mold, You’re So Beautiful

January 28, 2013 | Marina Galperina

You’d think the plasmodial slime mold is already fascinating enough. It can solve puzzles. It can make music. It’s, essentially, an intelligent, slithering alien goo.

But wait. There’s more.

Creeping Garden is a new documentary produced, researched and directed by Tim Grabham and Jasper Sharp and it’s “a real life science fiction movie” featuring fringe scientists, artists and mycologists that work with the magical mold. It’s shot gorgeously. It features an original soundtrack by Jim O’Rourke of Sonic Youth who also scored Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man.

The slime mould is being used to explore biological-inspired design, emergence theory, unconventional computing and robot controllers, much of which borders on the world of science fiction.

But as well as exploring the slime mould in the lab, the film will also travel out into the wild, hunting for the organisms in their natural habitat with dedicated amateurs and experts alike.

Intense.
