News surfaced that James Franco would be making a movie about The Room in February, when the actor-cum-filmmaker-cum-king of Instagram purchased the rights to the actor Greg Sestero’s memoir about his time on set. Titled The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the “hilarious and inspiring” tome chronicles Sestero’s experience playing Mark in the greatest film of all time, including his relationship with the mysterious auteur Tommy Wiseau.
Now, thanks to an Opie & Anthony interview with Seth Rogen, we now know Franco plans to play Wiseau himself. Surprising, perhaps, considering Franco’s Sestero-esque good looks, but it begins to make more sense when you consider this quote from Rogen about the filmmaker’s attraction to the material:
I think people like the idea of people whose ambition way outweighs their talents. Like there might be something inspiring to people about that. It’s like, this guy didn’t care? Why should I care? He wanted to make a fucking movie and he didn’t let the fact that he didn’t have any idea how to do it stop him from doing that. There’s something endearing about that.
Maybe Franco and Wiseau aren’t so different after all. Anyone who disagrees doesn’t understand anything, man, and can leave their stupid comments in their pocket!
