Earlier today, around fifty people gathered outside the Russian Consulate General near Central Park to protest President Putin’s anti-gay laws. From banning pride parades for the next 100 years, to making any public mention of the existence of LGBT criminal “gay-propaganda” to declaring that anyone visiting Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics — athletes included — can be arrested for acting “gay” and “pro-gay,” Russia’s homophobic government has been very prolific.
The protest was organized by New York-based RUSA LGBT group. Protestors poured Stolichnaya into the street to encourage the boycott on Russian-brand vodka, even though prominent LGBT activist Nikolai Alekseev and the Stoli CEO both have said the vodka boycott won’t be effective in changing Russian laws. However, their proposed boycott goes for beyond vodka alone.
