Guccifer, known mostly for hacking George W. Bush’s AOL email and exposing his bath-time self-portraits, has been sentenced to four years in jail. Marcel Lazar Lehel, a former cab driver, was arrested earlier this year in Romania. The prison term could be upped to seven years with the suspended three-year sentence he received after a prior hacking arrest.
Along with revealing Bush’s painterly aspirations and inadvertently launching his career as a bad appropriation artist, Guccifer allegedly collected Hillary Clinton’s email exchanges after the Benghazi attack, Bill Clinton’s butthole-like doodles, as well as security codes and private photos. Profiling Guccifer for New York Magazine, Adrien Chen described Guccifer’s random targeting as having “schizophrenic logic.” Among the hacked government and military officials, journalists, academics and celebrities were Colin Powell, Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell, and some Rockefellers. In emails with The Smoking Gun, Guccifer connected them with statements as, “The evil is leading this fucked up world!!!!!! I tell you this the world of tomorrow will be a world free of illuminati or will be no more.”
Though Guccifer employed a variety of hacking tactics, he frequently simply guessed security answers using publicly available information. (Images: Guccifer)
