After noticing the woodland creature’s nocturnal feeding habits, he staked out an area just off the road near the stenciled Banksy piece, waiting for a real badger to make an appearance—and finally, one did!

If Rome is the Eternal City, New York is its twin flame: a gritty, glittering town built on the backs of empires won and lost, reduced to rubble and reborn like the phoenix. After ignoble defeat in World War II, Italy reemerged as a a beacon of culture and style with La Dolce Vita in the 1960s. But underneath the sparkling veneer, the dark, relentless shadows of Neo-realism lurked. Here the brutal cost of modern life was exposed, a world filled with victims, villains, and outlaws. It was catnip for a new generation of American filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola who saw in Little Italy a kindred spirit. With the epic collapse of New York in the 1970s, Hollywood closely followed suit, crafting a wealth of neo-realist copaganda films and TV shows that cast police officers as rugged anti-heroes locked in battle with the underworld. Reality was less flattering. They were simply working class high school graduates willing to do the bidding of the state.

“When asked why I became so interested in the police, I have to answer, everyone should be. If we do not concern ourselves with who the police are – who they really are — not just ‘cops’ or ‘pigs,’ ‘law enforcement officers’ or ‘boys in blue,’ we run the real risk of finding that we no longer have public servants who are required to protect the public, but a lawless army from which we will all take orders,” photographer Leonard Freed (1929–2006) wrote in “Police Work,” first published in 1980. After documenting Black life across the nation during the mid-1960s at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, the Brooklyn native and celebrated Magnum Photos member returned home and embarked on a decade-long journey behind the thin blue line...

January 6, 2021 marked my first trip to Washington, D.C. Originally, the plan was to go down there with a reporter friend and cover the inevitable shitshow that would inevitably follow the highly emotional “stop the steal” rally, but never, in my wildest dreams, did I expect it to include an unauthorized tour of the Capitol. After the natural high of gaining entry to the building where Congress works wore off and I started noticing militias moving with purpose and heard MAGA chants of “hang Mike Pence” echoing through the halls, a very real sense of dread started to develop over me.

First, I was worried that any moment, this could become a live fire event and whichever authorities were doing the shooting, they would probably be justified—imagine if this same group had just trespassed onto the White House lawn? Drone strike would have taken them all out and the surrounding blocks of red hat-wearing chuds. Second, I saw American democracy for what it was: fragile, like a Nature Valley Crunch bar that crumbles apart in your lap. It was all a myth. It was all a lie.

Why are we worried about fancy new Russian MiGs or the latest Chinese aircraft carriers, when the real threat is directly coming from within the house? All it takes is the breaking of norms by a sociopathic conman incapable of decency to put a crack in the foundation of the republic? Despite this very public attempt to overthrow the government, the secret documents stashed near a toilet, the self enrichment, and the criming, voters seriously decided to give its worst domestic abuser the keys to the house again. So, here we are, four years later, and apparently we haven’t learned a damn thing. If anything, we’ve just become more cynical and more apathetic and more incapable than ever before of becoming a serious nation, ever again. The political cartoon you’re looking at—a sharp jab at Jeff Bezos and other tech billionaires offering up tribute to a statue of a soon-to-be President Trump—was just killed by the Washington Post. Its creator, Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Ann Telnaes, resigned in protest. "I have had editorial feedback and productive conversations – and some differences – about cartoons I have submitted for publication, but in all that time I’ve never had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at. Until now," Telnaes wrote online, explaining her decision to quit the position she’d held since 2008.

Political cartoonists are traditionally given broad creative freedom, making this censorship as unprecedented as when Bezos, the Post’s owner, meddled in the paper’s editorial decisions months ago and pulled its Kamala Harris endorsement ahead of the election.

Bezos and America’s other modern-day robber barons aren’t just protecting their own interests—they’re perfecting the art of “anticipatory obedience” as they all fall in line, and expect you will too.
