90-Year-Old Granny Tries Virtual Reality, Explodes With Joy

April 15, 2013 | Andy Cush

Paul Rivot’s grandmother is 90 years old. She lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and the advents of AM/FM radio, television, and the internet. In the above video, she tries out the extraordinarily powerful Oculus Rift virtual reality headset for the first time, and it is positively heartwarming.

Rivot set the headset to its Tuscany demo, which provides the wearer with an immersive, 3D-rendered view of the titular coastal region of Italy. His grandmother explores the landscape and marvels at the level of detail– “I can’t get over the leaves moving. I’m amazed. I don’t believe I’m seeing this,” she says at one point–mouth agape with disbelief. At one point, she asks if she’s still sitting in the kitchen where she started. Technology is amazing. So are old people.
