Keep your eye on the Prettiots, because before you know it, they’re going to be up in your head and you won’t be able to get them out. The New York City-based ukulele-fueled pop band is smart and funny on the surface, but they make it look accidental in a way that satirizes what we expect from teenage girls (only bassist Lulu Prat is currently a teenager, though. See what I mean? Levels!). They only seem bored; in reality, they’re working really hard. The New York Times wrote about their experience at SXSW, where they played about a million shows and attracted the attention of Rough Trade, who will be putting out a 7″ of their single “Boys (I Dated In High School).” Lead singer/uke player Kay Kasparhauser put together an annotated playlist for ANIMAL. “The Slits are cool they make me siked on having a vagina.”
France Gall – “Laisse Tomber les Filles”
“France Gall was really pretty, this song and most of her other songs were composed and written by Serge Gainsbourg, who is one of the best pop writers of all time. I don’t know what it is about because i don’t speak French.”
Veruca Salt – “Earthcrosser”
“This song makes me think of my friend Carly. I really like Veruca Salt they make me wish i played guitar.”
Del Shannon – “Runaway”
“This song is sad and good and makes me want a milkshake and Del Shannon is sad and good too.”
The Blow- “Bonjour Jeune Fille”
“This song is by The Blow off their album Paper Television, which I listened to over and over in like 10th grade. It is a coincidence that this song is also in French because a) they are not French and b) i still don’t speak French.”
The Supremes – “(He’s) Seventeen”
“This song is cool because it is about teenage love and by the Supremes.”
George Formby- “Why Don’t Women Like Me?”
“Buster Keaton has a hard time getting chicks. IDK why tho because Ukuleles are basically chick magnets.”
Queen – “Fat Bottomed Girls”
“Queen is my favorite band maybe ever. This song makes me wish I had a bigger butt and also that Freddie Mercury was still alive.”
Donovan – “Season of the Witch”
“Donovan is cool, I saw him play a couple years ago though and it was weird. This song makes me feel sneaky.”
