Here’s the Most Beautiful Moldy Bread You’ll Ever See

January 25, 2013 | Andy Cush

Singaporean artist Sookoon Ang created Your Love is Like a Chunk of Gold, the above series of wonderfully decaying hunks of bread, using ammonium phosphate, which crystallizes when phosphoric acid is added to ammonia, and is often used in fertilizers. There’s something interesting about the way the geometric crystals are both elegant and ugly, inspiring awe while evoking the stomach-turning feeling of seeing mold in your kitchen. According to Designboom, the sculptures “[become] a contradiction referencing the idea of comfort and pain side by side similar to the experiences of love and romance.” They’re also very pretty.

Your Love is Like a Chunk of Gold will be on display at Art Stage Singapore 2013, January 24-27.
