“Listen In” is a weekly feature in which we ask musicians to curate a mixtape-length YouTube playlist of songs they’re currently digging.
Big Deal’s music takes the familiar sounds of power pop and acoustic balladry and lovingly twists them in new ways. Similarly, much of the band’s “Listen In” playlist is comprised of a who’s who of popular indie, but the tracks are sequenced in a way that invites reevaluation and appreciation of the material. Dig how The Holy Mackerel’s “Love for Everyone,” a ’60s rock deep cut, flows right out of a track from current-day psych torchbearers Tame Impala, for example, or the shared DNA between The Strokes’ electric piano ballad “I’ll Try Anything Once” and the hushed Japanese pop track that precedes it.
