ANIMAL Needs More (Paid) Interns: Look at Our Roof

June 12, 2013 | Marina Galperina

Do you like what we have been up to lately?

We trolled Supreme, got love from Rachel Maddow, beat Tribeca Film Festival in the Vine game and reported from the front lines of #OccupyGezi. We interviewed artists, made mixtapes, documented graffiti in London and shot the “Rent Is Too Damn High” music video for Jimmy McMillan all over NYC. If last year we were about boxer Eric KellyMerry Indie Xmas and the “drone” artist, this year, we’re about dogs, bikes, street artistshackerstroublemakers and “rap quotes.” Plus there’s the Backdoor Pharmacist, Printed Internet

Damn, we do a lot. Want to do it with us? Self-motivated, detail-oriented pros and weirdos who live in New York are wanted. Cowards are not. We have a nice office. Free coffee. Check out that roof tho. (Yes, some of us work late.)

ANIMAL Is Seeking Interns, Starting in July!

Ideal candidates are available daily or for as many days a week as possible — working mostly from our Hell’s Kitchen office or in the field on assignments, though sometimes remotely. You will be working directly with our entire team, learning by doing and making contacts. We are looking for one editorial intern and one video intern.

Editorial: Please show your journalism/blogging experience or other demonstrations of strong writing/thinking/not-bullshitting skills. Interest in art is very much appreciated. We’ll appreciate if you know your way around WordPress, Photoshop, and most importantly, the streets of New York City.

Video: Please link us to your reel and/or video portfolio. Experience with Final Cut Pro, DSLR and YouTube is encouraged. Fast, eager learners are welcome.

Check out our features and films page for recent projects.

Intern Duties Will Include…

Writing many blog posts.
Writing original stories: Journalism.
Pitching features/projects.

Transcripts, research, and keeping a lookout.

If interested, please e-mail a quick note about yourself, resume, availability and links to your work. Also, show us a few of your favorite blogs and/or news sites and link your personal page/Twitter/whatever looks clever, if you like. Email marina@animalnewyork.com with the subject “Editorial Intern Application.” Application deadline: July 1st, 2013. This is a paid internship. You do not need to be in school. Intern terms are flexible.

In the past, our interns wrote about “insane” art on abandoned post office floors, scavenged for tiny 3D-printed sculptures at the High Line, broken stories on gallon smashing and famous last tweets, fabulously covered the New Aesthetic pizza and MetroCard artinterviewed burlesque performers, hunted for Today’s Pigeons, made a Russian dash-cam car crash supercut, designed minimalist pictograms about NY subway deaths, spent a night in a mini art dome in a park and told the Boy Scouts they can keep their medals.

ANIMAL’s previous interns have moved on to work at TIME, Huffington Post and more. Our full time designer Nate Cepis and staff writer/interventionist Andy Cush started as interns.

We’re also looking for freelance writers.
Pitch original stories and re-occurring features to marina@animalnewyork.com too. We pay well. Don’t send crap.
